Purpose of the Position
The Trainee Train Assistant role at Transnet Freight Rail supports Train Drivers in the safe operation of different types of trains, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, and heavy-haul locomotives. This role is essential for ensuring that cargo reaches its destination safely and on schedule, thus meeting customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation and Maintenance: Prepare and maintain locomotives, conduct brake tests, and keep work areas clean.
- Communication Setup: Check and handle communication equipment like radios and walkie-talkies to maintain constant contact.
- Safety and Compliance: Conduct pre-departure safety checks, attach/detach vehicles, and adhere to all train-handling procedures.
- Assist in Train Operations: Support the Train Driver by monitoring the train’s safe movement, observing signals, and responding to emergencies.
- Record Keeping: Complete administrative duties, including maintaining the Train Journal.
Requirements
Educational:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics (not Mathematics Literacy) and/or Physical Science.
Physical and Medical:
- Minimum height of 1.6m.
- Ability to meet medical fitness standards.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Pass psychomotor assessments according to the Vienna Testing System (VTS).
